Ball-Drop Multistage Fracturing Systems

A technology in which balls dropped into the tubing string and landing in sleeve seats are used to isolate fracturing stages.

Advantages

  • Simplicity and speed. The technology requires no complex packer operations or expensive dedicated equipment: stages are activated by sequentially dropping balls of increasing diameter. This shortens job time and reduces the risk of complications.
  • Reliable stage isolation. The balls seat tightly in the sleeve seats, providing clear separation of treatment zones. This makes it possible to precisely control where the fracture is created and to avoid unintended reservoir treatment.
  • Suitability for horizontal boreholes. The technology is well adapted to long horizontal wells: dozens of stages can be performed, evenly distributed along the borehole to cover the maximum reservoir area.
  • Flexibility in selecting frac parameters. For each stage, the fluid and proppant volumes and the pumping mode can be selected individually to optimize production from specific reservoir sections.
  • Compatibility with existing equipment. Standard frac fleets and conventional tubing can be used, without the need for highly specialized equipment.

Application area and experience

  • Low-permeability reservoirs and shale plays. In such conditions it is critical to create many fractures to increase the well-reservoir contact area and ensure economic production.
  • Horizontal wells in conventional reservoirs. The technology allows efficient development of extended reservoir sections, especially where there is lateral heterogeneity of reservoir properties.
  • Hard-to-recover reserves (HTR). Including reservoirs with low permeability, high oil viscosity or complex geology, where standard production methods are ineffective.
  • Areas with heterogeneous reservoir structure. If the reservoir has interlayers of different permeability or zones with degraded reservoir properties, ball-drop MSF makes it possible to treat productive intervals selectively.
  • Re-engineering of old wells. The technology can be used for repeated production stimulation in previously drilled wells, where the borehole design and technical condition allow MSF.
